
Spearpoint Tactics is a law enforcement training group based out of Central Illinois. Owned and operated by active duty law enforcement officers, Spearpoint offers practical, real-world, solutions to complex problem sets. All of our curriculum is state-certified by the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board. Custom courses are available upon request.
Meet our team
Matt Marass
Matt began his law enforcement career in 2012. His background is diverse and includes various duty assignments within Patrol, Criminal Investigations, two Multi-Jurisdictional Tactical Response Units, Field Training Officer, and School Resource Officer.
Matt holds several instructor certifications to include CQB Tactics Instructor, High Risk Vehicle Stop Instructor, Active Shooter Instructor, Low Light Instructor, and Ballistic Shield Instructor.
Matt is currently employed full-time with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office and is assigned to the Patrol Division.
Andrew Henton
Andrew Henton began his law enforcement career in 2013 and has over a decade of tactical operational experience on a multi-jurisdictional tactical team.
Andrew is a Firearms Instructor, AR-15 Armorer, Less Lethal Instructor, Taser Instructor, High Risk Vehicle Stop Instructor, and a graduate of Force Science Institute’s Certification Course.
Andrew is a Lieutenant with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office and is currently assigned to the Investigations Division. Andrew also serves as the Assistant Team Leader on the Tactical Response Unit.
Dane DeWitt
Dane DeWitt brings over a decade of law enforcement experience to the team with an expertise in both traffic stops and DUI enforcement.
Dane is a Firearms Instructor, Red Dot Pistol Instructor, Patrol Rifle Instructor, Glock Armorer, Pressure Point Control Tactics Instructor (PPCT), RADAR / LIDAR Instructor, High Risk Vehicle Stop Instructor, SFST Instructor, and a Field Training Officer.
Dane is employed full-time with the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office and assigned to DUI Enforcement in the Patrol Division.
Jay Winkleman
Jay began his law enforcement career in 2018 and has 6 years of prior experience as an emergency services dispatcher.
Jay’s law enforcement experience includes various duty assignments within patrol, criminal investigations, first line supervision, and administrative functions.
Jay is a Pressure Point Control Tactics Instructor (PPCT) and a Field Training Officer.
Jay is currently employed with the University of Illinois – Springfield as a Police Officer.

Modern High Risk Vehicle Stops (HRVS)
Our modern high risk vehicle stop class is an 8-hour course focused on harnessing modern vehicle design to enhance officer safety. This hands-on class will emphasize the principles of time, distance, and cover to maximize decision-space and de-escalate situations. During this course, students will have the opportunity to practice the 25-yard shot utilizing simunition weapons and practice utilizing several different patrol vehicles as cover. The course culminates in scenario-based training where students will practice employing HRVS tactics in a number of different situations.
This course is certified through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standard Board (ILETSB). Students attending this course are required to bring their duty belt, holster, and magazine pouches. If issued, a load-bearing vest is highly recommended.

Advanced High Risk Vehicle Stops

Our Advanced HRVS course builds upon the foundational principles from the Modern HRVS class. During this 8-hour course, students will undergo an HRVS refresher, discuss and employ nighttime tactics, practicals on defeating auto glass, vehicle extractions, and explore unorthodox vehicle positioning and approaches.
This course is certified through the Illinois Law Enforcement Training and Standards Board (ILETSB). Students attending this course are required to bring their duty belt, holster, magazine pouches, pistol, rifle (if issued) and flashlight. If issued, load bearing vests and weapon-mounted flashlight are highly recommended. Students who have an NLTA pistol and rifle are encouraged to bring them. Class size is limited to 12 students.


Ballistic Shield Operator

Our ballistic shield course introduces end-users to ballistic shield operations. Students will learn about the capabilities of a shield and when and how to employ them. Our curriculum covers building clearing, weapon manipulation techniques, reloads, personnel recovery drills, and more.
This course complements both of our HRVS classes and specifically covers vehicle approaches and clearing techniques utilizing a shield.
Students attending this course are required to bring their duty belt, holster, pistol, and rifle and ballistic shield (if issued). A weapon-mounted flashlight is highly recommended. Students who have an NLTA pistol and rifle are encouraged to bring them.
This class is ILETSB approved and meets several mandate requirements to include de-escalation, high risk traffic stops, and scenario-based role play.
